US Open 2025: Lamens Snatches a Set but Falls Short Against Iga Swiatek

Despite her best efforts, Suzanne Lammens was unable to upset Iga Swiatek in the second round of the US Open on Thursday. The Dutch tennis star won one set before falling 1-6, 6-4, 4-6.

The first set at Arthur Ashe Stadium was pretty fast. Swiatek started it 3-0 and Lamens, who was on centercourt at a Grand Slam for the first time, took a little of the game back.

The next three games again went to Swiatek, and within just half an hour she converted her first setpoint. One backhand was enough for Lamens.

Lamens performed better in the second set, and after trailing initially 2-1 she broke Swiatek's serve with a lovegame. The climax of that game was a fancy lob that brought a smile to the players box.

The score was 3-3, but Lamens had to give another break. Swiatek lost the lead with a double fault, which gave Lamens confidence.

World no. 66 Lamens came to a 5-4 lead and finalized the point in one game. Lamens became the second Dutch player to win a set against Swiatek; the first was Lesley Pattinama-Kerkhove at the 2022 Wimbledon.

Drama of the final set:

At 1-1, Lamens gave two double faults, and Swiatek regained control. The score became 4-1 in favor of Swiatek. Lamens still kept the fight going and broke Swiatek's serve to reach a position of 5-3. But the match decider Swiatek finished with her serve and such after 2 hours and 6 minutes, on the third matchpoint.

In the post-match interview Swiatek said:

"There were many mistakes, but I played better in the end. It seemed the result was depending on me. The competition was tight in the second set, but in the third set I confidently finished the game with my serve."

Lamens' milestone: This was the first time for Lamens in the second round of the US Open. In the opening round she had defeated American wildcard Valerie Glozman.

This player from South Holland was the Netherlands' only hope in the single draw. Tallon Griekspoor, Botic van de Zandschulp, and Jesper de Jong were all eliminated in the first round of the men's competition.
