US Announces New Rules for Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants: Interview Scheduling Changes Explained"

The United States has made significant modifications to the non-immigrant visa procedure, strengthening the requirements for visa applicants. The most notable change is that applicants can now only schedule visa interviews in their home country or place of residence. The long-standing interview waiver method, known as the "dropbox," has been phased out in most categories. These new rules will take effect on September 6, 2025. This is expected to have a direct impact on international students, professionals, and business travellers.

Dropbox Facility Ends

For many years, the dropbox, or interview waiver, system made it easier to apply for certain types of visas in the United States, including H-1B, L-1, F-1, and O-1. Instead than interviewing at an embassy, eligible applicants simply submitted paperwork. However, starting of September 2, 2025, this feature will be withdrawn.

Almost all candidates, including those filing for visa renewals, will now be required to attend an in-person interview. According to the US State Department, this reform will improve transparency and security while perhaps increasing processing times. Diplomats, official visa holders, and applicants with recently expired B-1/B-2 visas will receive restricted exemptions.

Country-Based Restrictions

The United States has also said that non-immigrant visa applicants must apply through the embassy/consulate of their home country or place of residency. Previously, many people travelled to other countries (such as Canada or Mexico) to get rapid interview times. This route is now virtually obsolete.

Applicants from countries without a regular US embassy will be eligible for an exception. Others will need to apply in their own country and present proof of residency.

Longer Waits and New Requirements

Visa interview wait periods vary by nation. Following the implementation of the new regulations, delays are anticipated to expand even further. It is recommended that you monitor the US State Department's "Global Visa Wait Times" webpage for regular changes.

Furthermore, the conditions for rescheduling interviews have altered, commencing January 1, 2025. Interviews can now be rescheduled only once, with no additional expenses. A second alteration or absence will result in a new charge.

The meaning of the major change

The US administration claims that new measures will boost border security and enable for better candidate vetting. However, critics feel that removing Dropbox will have an influence on the number of international students and professionals looking to study and work in the United States.

Countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia are already actively seeking international talent. The new US laws may make it more difficult for international students and qualified professionals to make a decision. It's evident that those relocating to the United States will need to prepare more than ever before, since the procedure has gotten more demanding, costly, and time-consuming.
