G-Dragon becomes the youngest recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit… ‘I will share this honor with my BigBang members

G-Dragon (Kwon Ji-Yong), a global K-pop icon, has once again made history, this time not on stage, but in the annals of South Korea's cultural legacy. The BigBang frontman and solo performer was awarded the Ok-Gwan Order of Cultural Merit, making him the youngest person ever to earn this distinguished accolade. The prize, given at the 2025 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards at the National Theatre of Korea in Seoul, recognised his exceptional contribution to the globalisation of K-pop and the propagation of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) globally.

In his passionate acceptance speech, G-Dragon reflected on his path from boyhood ambitions to international superstardom. "When I was six years old, my mother took me to an audition — that was when I first dreamed of becoming a singer," he told reporters. "I accomplished that aim in my teens, won prizes in my twenties, and now, in my thirties, I've been awarded the Ok-Gwan Order of Cultural Merit. I'm excited to see what my thirties will bring." His statements elicited tremendous ovation from fans and fellow artists, who recognised a career that defined a generation of music enthusiasts.

G-Dragon, who is preparing to celebrate BigBang's 20th anniversary next year, dedicated the honour to his bandmates and fans. "I grew up admiring singers who were like bright stars in the night sky. "I listened to their songs as a kid, and now I've become one of those stars myself," he remarked, adding with emotion, "I will share this honour with my BigBang members." His address also emphasised his conviction in music's universal power, stating, "Music can be felt across language barriers." I aspire to be regarded as an artist who established a distinct style that transcends ages and generations."

This year's Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards, currently in their 16th year, honour achievements in film, music, comedy, voice acting, and literature. Along with G-Dragon, other honourees were actress Kim Hye-Sook, actors Lee Byung-Hun and Jung Dong-Hwan, comedian Jeon Yoo-Sung, and voice actor Bae Han-Sung. The Ok-Gwan title is the second highest level of cultural merit, representing artistic creativity and cultural leadership.

As G-Dragon continues to push the boundaries of K-pop artistry, this award solidifies his status not only as a musician, but also as a cultural ambassador whose music crosses countries. His legacy, founded on innovation, individualism, and emotional honesty, continues to inspire millions around the world. As he concluded, "May you all have sweet dreams tonight — dreams that will one day become reality."
